WELLINGTON NOTES.
(BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Wellington-, this day. NEW ISSUE OF POSTAL NOTES -?:
Thk new issue of five and one pound postal . notes authorised by the Postal Notes Amendment Act of last session, will be com- - menced before expiration of the financial year. A special design has been prepared for the new Government notes, and the en- ' graved platea will shortly arrive from
London, when the printing will com-^ menco forthwith. The first iaaue will ba limited to £100,000, as stated by Mr Ward* .. in his speech at Winton, and they will be issued through the various post offices , of the colony in the usual way.
TARIFF REFORM
1 have reason to think that the Ministers '. will, during the recess, give full considera- ' ■■ tion to some aspects of the existing ' fiscal policy, with a view to reform it. It will, I understand, be Sought to remove ;' some anomalies of the existing tariffs, so M''Jm to lighten the import duty upon products and material that may be necessary to local manufacturers, thuß stimulating in- ' dustry. The question of a less costly, if f | not free, breakfast table, will also occupy ?|' attention, but this, from a Treasurer's point of view is a costly affair, and he may' not bo able to agree to any great concessions. THE YEAR'S REVENUE. The Treasurer's estimate of the revenue . for the financial year as in the Budget was £414,109, and this sum the honourable ■'..,:.' gentleman informs me will bequite realised.,' ..;,. My opinion is that it will be exceeded, and , Mr VYard prefers to bd on the safe side.
MINISTERS' MOVEMENTS,
I have reason to believe that Sir Patrick | Buckley has abandoned his intention to proceed to Europe, and Lady Buckley will. shortly return to New Zealand. . ;
The Premier and the Hon. Mr McKenzia were in Christchuroh last night, and" were duo here this morning. Cabinet was . exnected to meet to-day. : The Minister of Lands has almost re-11 covered from his illness. . <; £ MORTALITY OF SHEEP. Mr Charlton, the Government veterinary:. expert, reporting upon the mortality of sheep on the west coast of the North, Island, traces the same to an enormous; excess of food, particularly trefolia, containing albuminoid. For treatment, the transfer of aSected stock to comparatively" poor country is chiefly recommended, orwhen a change is not practicable, to be, yarded at night.
