Full details regarding the drowning ot Austin Cullen at Ornawheto River, Kaipara, show tbab ho was quite close to the shore at the time of the occurrence At the inquest, Henry Marsh deposed that he lent the punt to Cullen, bub told him it leaked. Cullen asked if there was any danger. He replied that there wan not, provided Cullen took a lump of clay with him to stop the cracks. Later on he saw Cullen on the river striving to get back again. Cullen eeemed confueed. His (Marsh's) boy 9 wanted him to go to Cullen'e assistance, bub he thought there was no danger, as a lighb wind was drifting the punt towards the shore. When the punt got near the shore Cullen disappeared altogether. The boys went to his assistance, but the body was nob found until the tide went out. There was nob more than five feeb of water where the pnnt upseb. A verdict of " accidentally drowned" waa returned by the jury.
