BRIDGES SWEPT AWAY.
ESTIMATE OF LOSS

Thames, this day. It ia estimated the Borough Council wi 1 ■ W?o at least £2,000 as bho result of the flood. Several bridges have been swept away, while the loaa amongst tradespeople is about £1,500. In addition to this, there is loss by private individual*, which is considerable. A mooting of the General Purposes Comixxiutue of the Borough Council was held ihia afternoon, when it was decided bo send i.he following wire to the Mayor, Mr McGowun, M.H.R, who is ub present at Cornn:andel on a visit : " Severe datn&f.'e to roudwayn, bridges, etc., by flood. Council de ire you to consuls with Mr Cadman with the view of obtaining asei*tanoe from the Govern men t towards cost of repairs, which it 'm estimated will exceed £2,000." The following reply has been received from Mr MeOowan : "I am exceedingly sorry to hoar of tho terrible calamity trial; haa befallen the Tisames, and the greafo destruction of property by last nipfhb's flood. The Hon. A. J. Cadman ia at present at Coromande). I interviewed him regarding nic to the district for repnira of damage by f!'O Hood, and he has promised Co come to Iho Thames in a day or two to see for himself thß extent of the damage." The county water race repairs will be finished on Thursday nijrhfc, and on Friday e\eiiing tho various batteries will be able to resume work. Men are now engaged clearing logs and sond from the main street;?. In numerous places tho debr'm is from two to three feat deop.
