AUSTRALASIAN ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.

O'CONNOR SCORES A WIN.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

[by electric telegraph—copyright.]

Melbourne, November 9. The weabher wa3 very fine to-day for tbe Champion Athletic Meeting, a strong cool breeze tempering the heat. The attendance was good, bub the course was rather soft, owing to tbe heavy rain yesterday. A drying wind, however, had considerably improved its condition by the bime bhe starting hour had arrived. The New Zealanders were only successful in one event to-day. Three fell to New South Wales and bwo bo Victoria. The following are the details :—

Putting thk Wbight. -^O'Connor, Auckland, 38fb 4|in ; Thurgood, Victoria, 35fb 4fin ; Moir, Chriatchurch, 34ft l£in. Half-Milk Flat.—Mcßae, Sydney, 1; Low, Dunedin, 2; Hughes, Victoria, 3. Fahy (Sydney) and Mcßae (Victoria) also started. Fahy gob bhe best) of the start, and Low was lasb to move. Half-way round Mcßae took tbe lead, and maintained ib to the end. Low made a greab efforc to overtake his men, bub came too late, and though he cub down all bub the leader, the Sydney man, who was running well, won easily ab the finish. Time, 2min 6 4-sbh sec.

High Jump.—Davis and Doyle, of Vicboria, and Cole, of Sydney, tied ab sfb 6fin. Moir, Chriabchurch, fell out ab sft sin. The tie will be jumped off on Saturday.

Three-mile Walk. — Barrett, Victoria, 1 ; Galloway, Dunodin, 2; Elkington, Victoria, 3. Eight started, bub only bhe three placed men finished. The Dunedin man led at a merry pace for the firab bwo rounds, bub Barrett, who walked in great style, then collared him, and was never utter approached. The New Zealander and Challinor, of New South Wales, kepb together until the ninth lap, alternately baking second and third positions. The latter, after a game race, gave up and retired, leaving Elkington to come in third. The first mile was covered in 7min 33sec and the second in 15min 46sec. Barrett won by 220 yds in 24min 0 l-sbh sec, a half minute under standard time.

220 Yds. Flat.—W. T. Macpherson, Sydney, 1; Reed, Victoria, 2 ; Greenwood, Victoria, 3. No New Zealander figured in bhe final heat. Balch was unplaced in his heat, and Low and Matson were scratched. The final was a hollow win for Sydney. Time, 22min 7-10th8ec.

120 yds Hurdles (10 flights).—Macpherson wai> scratched. Mabson, Christchurch, won his hoafc easily in 17 3-sth hoc, jumping excellently. Moir, who obtained second place in his heat, gob away badly, and, although well, he seemed disinclined bo make an effort. In the final, Davis, Vie, Matson, and Moir gob an excellent start. Moir led to the fourth hurdle, where Davis drew ahead. Matson caught him ab the seventh, and the finest race of the day ensued, Davis eventnally winning by aix inches. Time, 17 3-sth ccc. Cripps, the other starter, fell early in the race. Mile Flat.—Black, Vicboria, 1; Dalrymple, New South Wales, 2; Herbert, Victoria, 3. This event excited greab interest, and produced a great struggle between tho two first men, which ended in favour of the Victorian representative by five yards. Time, 4min 44aec.

Melbourne, this day.

The first day's championship athletic meeting cannob be regarded as one of brilliant performances. This is largely due bo the boisterous wind which prevailed, though the general form displayed was scarcely equal to the form shown in tho Sydney meeting some three years ago. The New Zealanders, although in good form, seemed to lack the dash of the former team. Mabson worked well, bub Moir appeared to be flurried. One difficulty the New Zealand men had to conbend with was the circular course, all events over 220 yards being run on continuous curves. Bub for the wind McPnerson would have equalled, if nob beaten his own record for 220 yards. Batger entered for tho hurdles, bub did not come from Syduey, the fact of which fixture clashing with races militated against the attendance. . .

A conference of delegates from the several colonies will be held to-night.
