THE V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.
The great Melbourne racing carnival commences on Saturday nexb ab Flemington. New Zealand promises to play an importanb parb in the leading evenbs. In bhe Derby we will be represented by Mr S. H. Gollan's promising colt Pounamu (by Newminster—Beryl), while bhe Aucklandbred filly Collarebte (by Castor—Necklace) will do battle for her birthplace in the Maribyrnong Plate. Five horees either bred or owned by Maoriland sportsmen remain in the Melbourne Cup, including the much fancied Loyalty, who may credib the rich stake to Mr D. O'Brien. The Derby is an open race. My fancies are Patron and Pounamu, and to split the pair I will declare for bhe Caulfield Guineas winner. Yesberday afternoon the final payment for the Melbourne Cup fell due. Thirtysix remain in, so bhat the field of starters promises to be well up to the average of pasb years. I shall have an opportunity of discussing bhe evenb ab length with my readers on Saturday, but my presenb impression is bhat either Tim Swiveller, Loyalty, or bhe V.R.C. Derby winner on Saburday, will be hailed bho winner. The following are bhe final acceptances for bhe Cup :— The Melbourne Cop, a handicap of 10,000 soys, and a brophy value 150sovs added. Tho owner of the second horse to receive 2000sovs, and the owner of the third lOOOsovs from bhe stakes. Two miles. sblb Mr S. G. Cook's b h The Admiral, 6yrs, by Richmond—Footstep ._., 9 9 Mr J.
