NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night. Present : Mr S. C. Brown (the Mayor), and Crs. Porter, McMaater, Shackelford, Donald, Holden, Webley and Davenport.
Water Consumption.—The Town Clerk reported that the consumption of water for the week ending October 23rd was 118,000 gallons and for the week ending October 30th 119,000 gallons. Newton West School. — Mr J. M. French, Secretary of the Newton School Committee, wrote thab as there is a heavy consumption of water at the Newton West Public School, that the rate charged be reduced to Is 6d per gallon.—lt was decided that the request be not granted. Fire at Warnock Bros.'—The superintendent of the Fire Brigade reported the fire at Warnock Bros.' factory. He said the Fire Brigade, assisted by the employees, worked hard for several hours trying to get the fire under. Thia was a very difficult task on accounb of having to pass water ftom Cox's Creek in buckets. He claimed £3 12s for the services of the Fire Brigade. Streets Committee.—The Streets Committee recommended: (1) Thab the woodwork of the Council chambers and the fence be painted. (2) That part of section 27, fronting Ponsonby Road and Williamson's Avenue, be drained, in conjunction with one ot the
streets leading from the Great North Road, when sufficient; funds are available. (3) After due inquiry, the Committee estimate thab the probable cost of tarring and sanding the footpaths would be 3d per squara yard.—The report was adopted on tha motion of Cr. Shackelfprd, an amendmenb by the Mayor that the report bo received being lost. Accounts. —Sundry accounts were passed for payment.
