BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual meeting of the Auckland Roard of Education was hold to-day, the members present being- Messrs R. Udy (Chairman), S. Luke, J. Muir, Lambe, Theo. Cooper, Grant, and Buckhursh

Finance.—The Board bank balances to date were stated to stand as follows: Education fund, cr., £826 11s lOd (exclusiveof £2,000 on fixed deposit): building fund (cr.), £2,905 2a lOd ; Girls' High School (or.)t £17 18s lOd. Chairman's Report.—Tho report of the Chairman, which was adopted, stated that tha Kobukohu and Weymouth Schools had been closed on account of illness.

Teachers,—Tho following resignations hud beee received :—Misa A. Thompson, Mangawai Beach School ; and Miss A. M. Darby, Greerton School. Arrangements had been made as follows :—Miss F. E. Picken, substitute ansistanb to Bereefordstreet bill the end of the year; Miss G. E, Barstow, to temporary charge of Ardmore in tho absence of the teacher ; Mr H. H* Thompson to Kaeo in the temporary absence of pupil teacher; Miaa A. Newbogin, temporary to Mangere School; Miss L. Vincent, pupil teacher, to East Tamaki, No. 2 ; Miss A Hodge, pupil teacher, to Tararu ; Mr E. J. Bauks, pupil teacher, to Waihi.

Gladding, waited on the Board with reference to the proposed removal of tho Woodside School from its presenb site to the Alanurewa Station. Tho deputation presented a petition signed by 45 residents of the district protesting againsb the removal.—The ChairI man said that he and Mr Cooper had 1 visited the district, and they though & that it would be in the interests of education to iiave two good schools instead of four weak ones.—lt was decided to communicate with the adjoining achool Committees on the matter before taking further action. Waiuku. — Air William Watts, of Waiuku, waited on the Board and presented a petition from 14 householders in the district asking to have the school in the dietricb of Karioitahi separated from Waiuku East and Waiuku proper. —The Board decided to send the petition to the Committee interested in order to ascertain their opinion. Scholarship Examinations. —The Chairman stated that the question of selections of English, etc., for the senior scholarships had been referred to Professor Pond of tho Auckland University College. Mr Fond had made the following recommendations : — English: Shakespear's 14 Merchant of Venice ". Text booka recommended, Abbott's •• How to Write Clearly." Instead of Morris' "Elementary Lexsonß in Historical English Grammar," he recommended Mason's " Shorter English Grammar." For Latin he recommended Book 21 of Livy, eh. 1—18; and Virgil's "Aeneid," book 9, lines 176—502. In the History of England, he recommended the period from 1649 to 16S8, A. D. In French he recommended Alfred De Vigney's "LaCanneDe J one," edited by Spiers; Greek, Bond and Walpole's selections from Lucian ; and German, selections from Uhland's ballads and romances. A vote of thanks was accorded to Professor Poud for his recommendations, which were adopted. It was decided to ask Professor Aldis and the Rev. Mr Runciman to act as examiners in connection with the scholarship examinations. New Schools.—Applications for the establishmenb of schools were received from Ruatangatu and Waitakerei. —In the former case it was resolved to ask the applicants what they proposed to do in the matter of the establishment of a school. Re Waitakerei, it was decided to adopt the inspector's report and establish a school, if the use of Mr Gibbons'house could be obtained. \

Kauakkangia.— Messrs Moore, Grant and Lambe, reported having visited the Kauaeranga Public School (Thames). They stated: "We endorse the report of the Board's architect, and if the Committee will contribute one-third of the cost, the shelter shed to be increased to the size requested by the Committee, lie raising school : We recommend that the Kauaeranga Boys' School be raised three feet and rilled in underneath as well as a portion of the playground, co as to admit of proper drainage of the buildings and grounds. The school also required painting, and they recommended that the improvements be effected during the Christmas holidays.—The report was adopted. Buildings and Grants tor Repairs.— Applications re school buildings for grants of money for repairs, were received and attended to in connection with the following schools :—Omaha, Hobsonville, Huia, Kiri KM (Thames), Alaunu, Mercury Bay, Tangihua, Te Awamutu, Ahuroa, Auckland city, Grahamßtown (Whangarei), Kauaeranga (2), Kaurihohore, Mangawai, Maungakaramea, Newton, Ngaruawahia, Onohunga (2), Onewhero, Otaika, O tonga, Pataia, Pakiri (2), Parkhurst, Ponsonby, Puriri, Rawene (2), VVaiorongomai, Waiotahi, Waipu Central and Woodside.
