THE CHALLENGE STAKES LAWSUIT.
D. O'BRIEN V. G. G. STEAD.
TnE Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr H. C. Brewer, was engaged this morning taking evidence on a commission which has been issued out of the Supreme Court of Canterbury in the case of O'Brien v. Stead. The only witness examined was Mr John Marshall, on behalf of the plaintiff. The examination will be continued to-morrow morning at ten o'clock, when v number of witneeees, including Messrs W. Porcival, J. Kirkwood, J. Knight, J. Evett and others, will be examined. We understand that witnesses will be also called on behalf of the defendant. Mr E. Hesketh appears for the plaintiff and Mr James Ruasell and Mr Tunks (Jackson and Russell) for the defendant. The examination, it is understood, is directed to the interpretation and effect of the conditions of the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes. The examination is likely to take up some time.
