OPENING OF THE SEASON.
SUCCESSFUL INAUGURATION.
Unlike their aquatic brethren, bhe knight of the willow found the weather of Saturday afternoon no drawback or discouragement, and consequently the inauguration of the cricket) season was a pronounced success. The attendance, probably owing to the postponement) of the rowing events, was very large, ladies being specially conspicuous bytheir numbers. Had the atmospherical outlook not been co ominous, brighter costumes would have been more en evidence; and would have added greatly to the enlivenment of the Bcene. As it was, the large oval alive with white moving figures, and flanked by the eloping dark green sward plantation, made an exceedingly pretty picture, which was thoroughly appreciated by those present. The ground was fully occupied to an extent which has not been approached dnring the lasb five or six years. As will be seen by the subjoined details of the various matches, the scoring was unusually low, and this is accounted for by the condition of the turf, which was very rough, with the grass long. SENIORS. UNITED V. PARNELL. This match was noticeable for small Bcoring on both side 3, which may be attributed mainly to the poor wicket) and bad lighb. The long grass, too, was responsible for stopping many bits. United xron the toss, and decided to bat. The innings needs little description, as the whole team only put together 33, about the smallest score United have ever made. Sloman Bhaped welj on hie first appearance in senior cricket, but the general batting waa decidedly weak. Lawson and Mills bowled with deadly effect for Parnell, the former taking 5 wickets for 14 runs, the latter 5 for 17. Parnell fared rather better than their opponents, and had scored 52 for 6 wickets when the bell rang. Holle played a very steady innings of 11, and Stone (14) and Mills (10) also materially assisted the total. D. flay waa very successful with the ball for United, taking 5 wickets for 34 runs, and Sbemaon also bowled steadily, bub without much luck. Walton was noticeable for some very clean fielding on the rough ground which our City Fathers think fjood enough for cricket). The full scores are :— united. —Firsb innings. Auckland batted first for 96 the only scores worth mentioning being those of Lundon, 33; Richard, 28; and Neill, 10. ; The firsb named was in splendid form and I punished the: balls in a manner that made the Gordonites look rather gkm, and they felb greatly relieved when Gould's bowling caused a change of babsmon. The Rev. I Richards was very careful in hia hitting bub gave an opening which Gould promptly accepted. The Gordon men followed, and at time call had secured 31 runs for four wickets. Lundon's bowling was chiefly responsible for this small score. The scores were bb follows :— Auckland. —Eirst innings. Ri Neill, b Kallender ... .- ~. 9 J. Arneil, b Kallender ... 1 T.
