ALLEGED LARCENY AS A BAILEE AND FALSE PRETENCES.

A TURK BEFORE THE POLICE COURT.

This morning ab the' Police Court before Messrs E. F. Rich and J. M. Lennox, J.P.s, a Turk named Anthony Joseph was was charged with two offences. Sergeant Gamble conducted the prosecutioD. Anthony Joseph was chargod that on the 11th October, at Auckland, then being the bailee of two watchea of the value of 27a, tho property of Cyprian HanaD, the same did feloniously steal, take and carry away. Accused was further charged thac on the 7th, of October at Whangarei, he did unlawfully and knowingly by certain false pretences obtain of and from Alexander Wilson one pair of trouaera of the value of 22s 6d, with intent thereby to cheat and defraud. Accused, who was undefended, pleaded not guilty to stealing the watchos. He said he took the trousers and gave prosecutor a cheque which was acoopted, and was due on the 17th of October. The prosecutor, Cyprian Hanan, a partner of the firm of Hanan and Zaloon, fancy dealers, of Queen-street, deposed that accused came to his place of business on the 11th of October, and asked to be allowed to examine some watches. Accused did so, and then asked witness to let. him havo the loan of 2 watches for half-an-hour, as he wished to show them to a friend, and he would bring them back. Witness lot accused have tho watches on condition that he returned then in half - anhour. Witness's partner was present. Accused did not come back with the watches, and he did not see anything of him until he was arrested. Accused stated that he was nob in prosecutor's shop on the 11th of October. He could get witnesses to prove this, his brother and a woman. He douiod that ho got tho watches, and he asked that! the case bo romanded, to aecure evidence on his bohalf. In referonce bo the trousers, Sergeant Gamble said the accused had obtained them from Mr Wilson, of Whangarei, and had given a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, at Newton. Accused admitted that he had given tho cheque to Mr Wilson. He told Mr Wilson not to present it until the 17th of October, and ho agreed. Tho accused further stated that ho had expocted to get money from some irieuds in New Plymouth. After consultation tho Bonch romanded the accused on both charges until the 26th inst., and allowed bail, accused in £20, and two surotios of £10.
