Alleged Attempt to Murder.
A WIFE CHARGED WITH
POISONING.

Wellington, this day. At 2.30 this morningl a woman named Ellon Blake was arrested at her residence in Froderick-stioob on a charge of attempting to murder her husband, James Blako, by administering poison. Blake, who is an old man of 73 years of age, has boon re moved to the Hospital, and is in a critical Btate. For some time Blako has been under medical treatment, suffering from a stricturo for which ho was using morcurial ointment. He was in the Hobpital and recovorod, but a woek or so ago he was seized with on illness which had the Bymptoms of general debility. Diagnosis of the case, however, led medical men to suspect the presence of poison, it was suggested that this might have been caused by the ointment which Blake had beon U3ing, bub inquiries on the part of the police resulted last night in the arrest of Mrs Blake. It is suspocted than the poison used was calo.no]. Some of this drug was found in a purse or bag belonging to Mrs Blake. Her husband was removed to the Hospital. Blake ia believed to be a remittance man, in receipt of money regularly from a relative at Home. The woman now in custody is his second wife. She is about fitty years of age.
