BERTHAGE OF DIRECT STEAMERS.
LENGTHENING OF THE QUAY-
STREET JETTY,
A suggestion of considerable importince came before the members of the Auckland Hnrbonr Board this afternoon with reference to the berthage oj ocean steamships. Tho various representatives of the direct lino of steamora trading to New Zealand wroto requesting that) the Board would take under consideration the desirability of lengthening; the Quay - street Jetty so as to admit of the ocoan steamers being berthed there for tho purpose of loading wool, frozen meat, otc. They understood there was no obstacle witli regard to a sufficient depth of water, and thought that the desired alteration could be made at a moderate cost, They thought it was of vital concern to the interests ot tho port that steamero and loading stiiua should bo berthed in closo proximity to the dumping warehouses. That wus necos?aiy to enable Auckland to compete favourably for tho coastal export trndo which bad drifted elsewhere of late year*, mainly beeauso Auckland dneo "noli offer equal facilities for the business.
