] THE CUSTOMS V. SHAKLAND | AND CO. ! Numerous inquiries have beon made of lato as to what; had bocomo of the celebrated case, tho Commissioner of Customs v. Messrs Sharland and Co., of this city, as representatives of the proprietors of *'Mother Seigol's pills." On referring to tho "Journal of Commerce and Labour," issued by the Department of Labour at "Wellington, of the 24th July, 1893, page 11, wo find that "The litigation between tho Customs Department and Messrs Sharlrsod and Co., representatives of tho proprietors of ' Mother Seigel'a pills' has at last beon settled by mutual arrangement, tho result of an oiler of compromise made by the linn's solicitors to the Commissioner of Customs. Tho goods have been released on the payment of duty amounting to £245 6s in accordanco with the Customs' assessment of value, and also at the rate of 25 per cent, in lieu of 15 per cent., and on the payment of a fine ot £100. Tho costs of tho action of the Court of Appeal will, in accordanco with the judgment, be paid by the Department."
