AN AMENDING ACT.
TO REMEDY TECHNICAL ERRORS,
ELECTORAL RIGHTS TO SHEARERS.
The Premier yesterday afternoon gave notice of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, a measure to rectify errors in the Electoral Bill, and give electoral rights to shearers.
The provision to correct mistakes with regard to Maori voters will, of course, go through without opposition, but there is reason to apprehend that there may be trouble over the proposal to extend electoral rights to shearers. There is no doubt that a majority in the House will support the shearers' rights, but the danger is that the Council may, as it did last year, extend the provision to many other classes, with a viewof defeating the proposal. There will, of course, be an attempt mada to include wemon and all " absent voters " in tho provision regarding electoral rights, and tho agreemont will not be arrived at without difficulty. No apprehension need, however, bafelb of tho woman's franchise being hampered by conditions, or defeated in any way, as the Electoral Bill ia now absolutely safe, and tho House will not agree to any tampering with it.
