THE VANCOUVER LINE.
TRADE WITH CANADA,
RESULTS OF AUSTRALIAN
SHIPMENTS.
From files of the Vancouver " Daily Nowa and Advertiser," to hand, at Sydney, by the steamer Miowera, tho following items of interest aro extracted: — "By tho Miowera some Australian mutton has been received, and it is selling from 10c. to ISc. per lb, tho same figures as obtained lor local mutton. Somo rabbits aud hares ulso received sold readily, tho former realising 40c. each, the latter 75c. Importers claim to liavo lost by the sale at these prices on account of the duty, iic. por Ib, otherwise good business could bo done in those articles, as both are scarce hero. It is freely stated that in tho ovent of potatoes ovor again reaching hero anything liko tho famine prices of a few weeks since, very largo shipments of Australian and Now Zealand tubers wiil be imported. Had tho prices lately prevailing hero been but been known in time at the Antipodes,, I,OUO tons would have been brought over on tho Miowera and sold in British Columbia at a vory handsome profit after paying good freight."
Commenting on thearrival ot the Miowera at Vancouvor alter hor second voyage, the same paper says : — " From Canada the freight o.'icring ig already sufficient to ensuro lull outward cargoes from Vancouver, and the circumstance is as satisfactory as it is unique m tlio history of such enterprises, which are generally of slow growth, and require years of patient effort, especially when tliore is eevoro competition from rivals of long standing. From Australia and intermediate places on the route, the oponings lor profitable traffic appear vory favourublo, the chief matter lacking at the present time being apparently the establishment of moro complete business arrangements between firms on both 6idee, with fuller and more definite information as to actual requirements and capabilities of the markets here in regard to Australian products. Meanwhile, as appears from our Ottawa correspondence, tentative and provisional arrangements between the Dominion Government and the steamship company have been replaced by ono for three years' operation of line, so that all questions of permanency are now at an end."
The samo paper says:—" The Miowera leaves for Australia this afternoon on the arrival of the I'acilic express. She has been loading cargo ever since the second day in port. Every available inch will be occupied and the cargo is from all parts of tho continent. Besides a big shipment of agricultural implements from Chicago is one from Toronto. Other freight consists of canned salmon, biscuits, frosh fish, lumber, lathes, pickets, tok snooks, shingles, dried fieh and lime."
