A.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

Despite the fine afternoon of Saturday lasb Dob more than 2,000 persons were presonb at Ellerslio on tho occasion or the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, which ushered in tho season of 1893-94. Speculation on the totalisators was fairly brisk, tho sum of £3,212 being handled agaiasb £3 055 ftfc last year's gathering. Mr Biomficld and his stuff worked the machines in their usual business-like manner. Owing to tho large amount of rain that lias fallen for months past, the racing track was in a very heavy state, while the saddling enclosure did not have that bright look wo aro accustomod to see in the spring. On the other hand it was quite boggy in parts and a stretch of aßphalb laid down from the grand stand to the tuialisator house was therefore much appreciated by tho public. The opening event of the afternoon was the Trial.Handicap and this proved a very ew™ for St. Kilda, the much fancied Yatteufeldt failing to gain a place. Demised and Ingorina wore made favourites for the Hurdle Race. The last-named, favoured by his hghb impost, 2 ob through the mud in great style, and scored a very easy win from the littlefancied Tattler, while Despised was third. Marquis of Tevvkesbury came to grief at tho firsb hurdle. The time was Smin 47£<iec. Adam Byer's trained both St. Kilda and Ingorina, Pennoll having the mount on each occasion, so the season opened auspiciously for them. Stanmoor waß the only withdrawal from the Spring Handicap. Although Pegasus was fretful jftor being saddled up, and hadßst2lb to carry, the majority thoughb that he waa capable of winning. Lottie, who looked in good heart, and Tulloch wore the only ones fancied of the others, while Eve, who was not ready for tho fray, had few' frionds, thei'e only being a total of £26 invested upon her in the two machines. Annabel and His Worship were responsible for tho pace made, and the last-named was first into tho home turn. Half-way down the straight, Pogaaua had the field in troublo, and coming on like a worthy son of his sire Nelson won with evidently a deal in hand by a length and a half, while Coal- , scuttle finishing with great gameness beat His Worship for third honours a few strides from homo. The public cheered Pegaaus loudly on his way to tho paddock. The juveniles for tho September Stakes honours were eagerly scanned by the public. Grenadier stood out aa the biggest of thorn all, but there waa not a finer-looking youngefor in tho field than Major George's h'liy Anniversary, who piomisos to do good service for her owner lator in the season. Lord Dunhico i 3 a nice shapely colt, and the master hand of the young trainor Frank McManamin waa shown in the condition of Lady Marion, n Malua filly on tho sinull side, However, Formo was the centre of attraction and George Wright had her in perfect condition. Sho wa3 made a pronounced favourite, and getting a way fir3t after nsarly half-an-liour's delay, boat her opponents without trouble. Formo was br.ii i at the Wellington Purk stud and cost her owner 230gs as a yearling lasb January. Tho Steeplechase produced the only finish of the afternoon, and it was of an exciting character. Despised, Parncll and Long Roper raced to the stone wall entering tho straight for homo in the order written, but Uospisod came to »ricf at tho obstacle thus leaving Parr.ell with a slight lead of Long Roper. A punishing race between tiie pair ensued'home, Long Kopor gaining: a head victory through eamoness and the resoluto riding of John Eae. Another good field went to the post for the Flying Stakes, Lottie gaining tho honours, after a good finish with His Worohip, who ran a much improved hor3e at the Meeting. Tho Mooting was brought to a conclusion by Nannie, who waa served up a hot iavourite, winning the Pony Handicap. Mr \V. Porcival, as usual, worked hard for the success of the Meeting, and got the races ; off well to time, the Secretary's efforts being ' ably seconded by 6ome of tho Committee i and Stewards. Impey's Band contributed a : choice programme of music on the lawn, land Mr T. McEwin had charge of the } catering department. Appended are details of the concluding events : —
