SonNDtNGS taken over bhe Indian Ocean show that ovor 50,000 tquare miles of ibs bed lie aba greater depth than 3,000 fathoms, whilo no Icsb than 13,000,000 of square miles aro between 2,000 and 3,000 i'ubhoms from bho surface. Tho average depbh along a lino of soundings extending from Java to Australia, ia 3,000 fathoms. Along the southern boundary the mean depth is bub one half of I his. Surrounding Madagascar is a shoal patch, which on the easb of the island, rapidly falls into the main basin ot tho Indian Ocean.
