SINCERITY OF THE GOVERNMENT.

CONCLUSIVE PROOF,

The Premier's announcement that the Government has advised His Excellency to give his assent to the Electoral Bill is accepted as conclusive proof of the sincerity of Ministers in wishing to pass the women's

suffrage. I understand there was real reason to apprehend that if the Bill went , back to the Council that tiuguat body would

reverse its previous decision and throw out

tho measuro. Rumour has it that the Hon. McLean had converted a wavering Councillor to an attitude of antagonism and that a Maori member who waa absent from the previous Council debate would attend to convert tho former majority in favour of tho Bill into a minority. This benevolent design of Councillors to slaughter the Bill has been frustrated by the resolve of Ministers to bring down a fresh Bill to repair a technical bl undor. The whole fate of the women's franchise now depends upon tho action of tho Governor, bub it is considered certain he will act on the wishes of his responsible advisers, and Bign the Bill as a matter of course. A petition againsb the Women's Franchise, signed by 2,G57 peoplo in Auckland, was presented to the Governor by Sir Geo. Whitmore this morning.
