INDIAN VICE-ROYALTY.
SIR H. NORMAN APPOINTED,
London, September 5. It is officially announced that General Sir Henry W. Norman, Governor of Queensland, has been appointed Viceroy of India. Lord Lansdowne's term as Viceroy of India expires in December. The " Times" says that Sir H. Norman's appointment comes as a great surprise. The " Daily News" thinks that a few men could be found who would fill the post better. Brisbane, September 5. Sir H. Norman has accepted the post of Viceroy of India. His departure is universally regretted. Brisbane, Septembor G. In the course of an interview, Sir H. Norman said he was unable to state why he had been selected as Viceroy of India. It was an unusual step for the Imperial Government to appoint so old a man to the Governor-Generalship. He received the first intimation of his appointment on Friday last. The appointment of Sir Henry Norman as Viceroy of India astounded the highest circles in India. The Marquis of Lansdowne was not informed of the appointment. Fears are expressed that the new GovernorGeneral will not follow the A/ghan and vigorous froniier policy of Lord Roberts and the Marquis of Lansdowne.
