APPEAL FOR GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE.

I , Wellington, this day. Mr Jackson Palmer received a telegram from the Mayor of Birkenhead, conveying the resolution of a public meeting of burgesseß and northern settlers, asking the /Government to instruct the district engineer to employ men to open up traffic stopped by land slip ab Birkenhead. Mr Palmer laid the case before Mr Seddon and urged'that the request be granted, because the Birkenhead Borough had no funds and could nob do tho work. Besides this Mr Palmer pointed oub bhab this was not a borough road only, but one of tho main north roads, and thab northorn traffic would be impeded till communication waa re-opened. Tho Minister still has the matter under his consideration.
