EAST COAST lAND SETTLE BlfiK'f COMPANY. STATEMENT BY MR MITCHELSON. With reference to our article of last night on the East Coast Native Land Settlement company and Mr Rees1 negotiations with the trovernment, the Hon. E. Mitchelson furnishes us with the followingstatement:— Abe Atkinson Government only undertook to acquire the lands owned by the East Coast Lands Company upon condition that these lands could be acquired at a price that would not only be advantageous to the colony as regards settlement, but also enable the Government to refund to the natives a portion of the land or money on account of their being almost entirely denuded of their land, in many cases without having received any remuneration ; and that the Atkinson Government upon no occasion agreed to purchase the two blocks named in Mr Reea' letter for £42,000. The whole arrangement was conditional upon satisfactory reports being received from the Government officers as to the value of the land; and, with this object in view, three distinct and separate valuations were ordered and personal inspection of the lands was made by direction of the late Minister for Lands. The instructions gives to the valuers were that, in respect of each block they were to take into consideration, before placing their values upon the land, the cost that would be entailed upon the Crown Lands Department in surveying it into sections and roading. Three independent reports were received from the valuators, and, after the Government had given these various reports careful consideration, they found that not only would they not be able to refund either land or money to the natives, but that the price proposed to be offered to the Company for the whole area was considerably loss than onehalf the amount owing to the mortgagees of the company. The blocks held by the Company, with respect to which the Government were negotiating, were :—Paremata, 8,526 acres; Mangaheia No. 1, 12,152 acres; Waimata N., 4,302 acres; Waimata E., 2,941 acres ; Waimata S., 7,l37acres; Pokawa, A and B, 3,3o2acres; Pakowhai, s,llßacres; Tangihaua, 4,550 acres; Okahuitiu, 15,213 acres ; Whataupoko, 5,995 acres ; Matawhero, 414 acres ; Kaiparo, 253 acres; Makauri, 50 acres; Hapara, 572 acres ; Te Kopua, 2,564 acres. The Paremata block referred to in the correspondence between Mr Ree3 and Mr G. F. Richardson comprised 8,526 acres. The land was valued at £2 an acre by Mr J. Aitken Connell, £2 10s by the Surveyor-General, and £2 12s by Mr G, Grant, proporty tax valuer. The Pakowhai block consisted of 5,118 acres. The land was valued at £2 an acre by Mr J. Aitken Connell, £2 11s by the Surveyor-General and £2 15s by Mr G. Grant. There were stated to be 10,000 sheep on these blocks. There is not a nicer or more delicious and grateful adjunct to our meals than Arthur Nathan's " .Reliable" Tea. Obtainable anywhere at 2s and 2s 6d per lb.—(Advt.) 79
