In the Police Court, Onehunga, yesterday, before Dr. Erson (Mayor) and Mr George J. Jackson, Justices, four youths, whose apes ranged from 12 to 14 years, named Payne, Neville, Murdoch, and Tope, were charged with stealing a quantity of oranges from the garden of Mr F. M. P. Brookfiold. They pleaded guilty, two of the boys ox-plaining that, although they were in tho company of tho other boys and gob some of the fruit, they did nob take tbe fruit off tho tree. Mr Brookfiold said that. one of his trees had been completely stripped of tho fruit. Sergeant) GreonO stated that Mr Brookfield did not desire that tho boy 3 should bo imprisoned, but restrained from repeating such offences. The Bench commented severely on the practice of robbing orchards, and ordered thai) the two elder boys should receive twelve strokes each of the birch, and the tyro younger| ones, Neville and Murdoch, six strokes each. At the Crown Lands Office yesterday, a ballot took place for lands recently opened up, and resulted as follows :—261 acres, Hukerenui: 1, J. N. McKay; 2, Jno. Whimp ; 3, A. J. The repairs and extensions to tho outer j eastern-tee of the Queen-street Wharf are being rapidly proceeded with. It will be a | valuable acquisition when completed and i ready tor uso,as the present accommodation I is cramped and meagre in the extreme During this vreek more than one steamer had to be berthed afc the Kail way Wharf as ; tho expected arrival of the mail boats prevented them from taking up their usual positions alongside the main structure. Besides being a great inconvenience to tbe public owing to its distance from Queen- j street, the Railway Wharf, with its net- ] work, is a chudo of endless anxiety to carters owing to their wheels becoiniug caught in the grooves. With a heavy load on this generally means considerable straining, if nob a smaßh up.
