EMBEZZLEMENT.
John Norman Liveset was charged at the Police Court this morning with having, on the 3rd of May, ab Auckland, when in the employ of William John Geddes and another, embezzled £2 14s and other sums of money received by him on their behalf. Messrs W. McCullough and H. Wilding were on the Bench.
Defendant pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. William John Geddes deposed that prisoner was employed as collector and canvasser. His salary was £2 per week, with commission. He also had a bonus at Christmas. The receipted account put in was in prisoner's handwriting. The money had nob been paid to the firm. Prisoner asked : Did you not givo me to understand that if I pleaded guilty to one charge, that alone would be preferred? Witness said the prisoner asked that fifteen charges should stand aside, so long as he did not defend the one case. That was agreed to, but yesterday defendant asked for a solicitor. Evidence was also given by William Jones and Patrick Quintan, The prisoner asked that any commission due to him might be paid to his late employers. The Bench fined accused £20, or in default six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
