UNEMPLOYED IN SIDNEY.
The Sydney Labour Bureau has now been in existence for 15 months. Twelve months ago there were between 12,000 and 13,000 unemployed registered there ; now it is estimated thab the unemployed number 6,000. Registration now averages between 20 or Zi) each day, being a little less than it was three months ago. Employment is found for about 20 persons each day. Altogether 9,000 men have been sent away, and in addition 2,000 men have been omployed indirectly through the agency of the bureau, making 11,000 in all. Just now the building trade is very slack, and a large number of artisans are seeking employment. Railway men and labourers are also in want of work. The*cost of the bureau ia pub down at £1,400 ; and the refunds on accounb of psssago money have amounted to a little over thab sum. An estimate lately made by Mr Creer brought him to the conclusion that there are about 600 or 700 loafers—men who do not want to obtain work. There has lately been a large domand for married couples at salaries ranging from £65 to £95 per annum. The bureau has sent between 50 and 60 boys away, and numbers of servant girls have aleo been found places. Mr Creer says thab there is a good deal of distress in Sydney, and thab between 400 and 500 rations are issued to families each week. Last year a sum of £189 was received in private donabions, and distributions wore mede of blankets and boots.
