Nahek,' thia day. A PiBE broke,out in Roach's drapery shop. Hastings, at 2,30 a.m. to-day, and spread over the .whole of the opposite block, deabroying twenty-two buildings,
Tbe estimated damage is £50,000. The following places were burnb :—
J ull'a Hastings Hotel. Wicket, draper. Chong Kee, grocer. Tyerman and Broad, chemists. New Zealand Clothing Factory. ! Hannah's boob shop. ; [ Hyde, babacconist. ! McEwen, drapor. : Roach, draper. Smythe, stationer. . Williams and Kettle's store. Maddisoa and Co.'s store. : Robson, watchmaker. Greene, commission agent. Bank of New Zealand. Maxwell's restaurant. Dennett's offices. Bank Now South Wales. Mayo, fruiterer. Wastney's Law Offices. Simpson, shooting gallery. A large building in course of erection for Maddison and Co. There was only one manual engine and a small privato one available, and the water supply was at low pressure. The Brigade worked admirably, and saved the Pacific Hotel. A strong breeze was blowing, bub fortunately the wind lulled, or half the town would have been destroyed. Although the fire broke oub when everyone was asleep, no lives were lost. No one was injured, but some narrow escapes from falling chimneys are recorded. THE INSURANCES. Ibis difficulb to get a correct list of insurances, but tho following have been ascertained :— Imperial Office : £2,500 on Roach's stock, partly reinsured; £600 on Smythe's stock, partly reinsured ; £'200 on Jull's hotel. Manchester office: £100 on Hannah's, £100 on Hyde'e stock. New Zealand Insurance: £200 on Smythe, £1,850 on Bank of New Zealand (£1,233 reinsured); on Jull'a'hotel'£l,Boo (£1,500 reinsured); £150 on building. Standard Office, £200 on BowJer'a furni- ; ture burnt in Smythe'a shop. ; North German Office, £200 on Hyde; : £200 on Roach's stock. Victoria, £250 on Hannah's; £250 on Bank New South Wales; £250 on McKwan's ; £500 on Williams and Kettle's. Norwich Union: £500 on Jull'a hotel ; £500 on Williams and Kettle's stock and | building ; £400 on Maddison's stock ; £300 on Kelly's three shopß; £200 on Roach'sshop. i Commercial Union: £700 on Roach's ; stock (£SOO from Imperial on stock, nnd £200 from Liverpool, London, and Globe on building); £300 on Smytho'a stock from. Imperial; £616 from New Zoaland on the Bank of New Zealand, building and contents; £250 on Jull'b building and contents. . The Standard has £2,000 insurances, and the South British £1,500—n0 details from either office. United, £250 on Jull'a Hotel, from the New Zealand. Alliance: £250 on Wicket's; £300 on Chong Kee's; £500 on Roach's ; £75 on Smythe's; £250 on Roberts. Tho Auckland office is advised thab the Alliance insurances total £1,100. The National Office is involved about £1,000, but particulars are not available. The South British refuse to give particulars.
