STEPHEN'S ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE.
BEANEY AND SONS' TENDER
ACCEPTED.

Wellington, this day. The Government this morning accepted the tender of Beaney aud Sons, of Auckland, for the Stephen's Island lighthouse, tower.
[The successful tenderers for this work, Messrs Beaney and Sons, are the wellknown iron foundry proprietors of Arch Hill. The work in question is of much the same character as that of the erection of- the tower of the Cuvier Island lighthouse, and the amount of the tender is about the same—some £700. The tender is for tha erection of a cast iron tower 30ft in height on bhe highesb portion of Steoben's Island, in Cook's Straits. Stephen's Island lies two miles north eastward of the northern end of B'Urville Island, and is one mile in extent, rising abruptly from the sea to a height of nearly I,oooft. Tho lighb ia to be placod on the summit of the island. This height is said by some experts to be too high for a lighthouse. The iron tower is to be Isfb 6in in diameter at the base, and 14fb at the summit. It will be surmounted by a glass canopy wibh revolving lighb 16fb in height (which, however, is nob included in the present contract).
