OPENING OF THE BOWLING SEASON.
The members of the Auckland Bowling Club had quite an ideal spring day for their opening on Saturday. Notwithstanding the attraction of the racea a large number of devotees of the more " gentle sport" of bowling were assembled on tho green at Grafton road. Tho old lawn looks beautifully green after its winter rest, and the grass on bhe new lawn already forms a thick sward and promises to give in time additional room for tbe players. Ab aboub three o'clock the members gathered round their president, Mr A. W. Thompaon, who made tbe usual short speech on the opening of the bowling season. After greeting tbe members he' referred to the work of the recces. The new courb to tho south had been cub down and levelled, and, as they would now see, gave promise of a tine sward when ib was once eatabliahed. Of courae ib would be some time before ib could be used, bub they might be sure that under the supervision of the greon superintendent, Mr Ross, it would bo in a fib condition to be played on ' when the tournament came off. That would be about the laat week of December or the first week of January. The question of a uniform for the Club was referrod to by the President. He said that it had been decided that the members should have a uniform for wearing at matches and tournaments. Tho pattern of the uniform had not yet been decided on, but the members could see to that later on. He reminded them that they would have to make groat efforts before the tournament came off. Only by practice could they hope to give a good account of themselves. Tho result of the match with Napier last season clearly showed that they had better men in the ', Club than those that represented them ab Napier, and he had no doubt that those who played on their side this year would bring preßtigo to the Auckland Bowling Club. He then declared the Green open iv the usual way, by throwing the "jack" acrossthe green. Thepresidentand the vicepresident (Mr Hardie) then chose teams, anda very interesting match took place in five rinks. The result was a win for Mr Hardies team by two pointß, the scores being 105 and 103. The following is an analysis of the scores :— President's Team. Vice-President's Team. No. 1 Rink. Holland v.
