OPENING OF THE ROWING SEASON.
The votaries of various summer pastimes have now nearly all started their operations, and this afternoon the aquatic season, as far as rowing is concerned, was lotmally opened. The affair took the form of a procession of pulling boats, and Heveral evolutions took place. The afternoon was fine, affording a good opportunity for the aquatic ceremony. The openingproved a decided success, so far as the numbers of boats out were concerned* Fully 60 boats took part in, the afternoon's movements, oach ot the local rowing clubs being woll represented. The boats assembled near the yacht Matanjji, Mechanics' Bay, shortly after 2.20 o'clock, and the procession was arranged as follows :—Naval outters leading, then private boats,'whaleboats, 4-oared string-tost gigs, pair-oars and single scullers, with .a miscellaneous assortment bringing up the roar and sailing boats on each flank. The spectacle preaentod was very pietty, and was witnessed by a large number of people who' gathered on various points of vantage. The course was up the harbour and round the steamer lona off Freeman's Bay, down to the Matangi again in single file, and then in one long breast lino to the lona, after which the boats dispersed. The order of the clubs was by seniority, and was as follows, with the number of boats from each:— North Shore R.C., 65 Ponsonby R.C., 2; Waitemata R.G., 4; St. George's R.C., 7 ; West End H.C., 5; City K,C, 4 and the Auckland R.C., 10.
