THE PRICE OF BREAD.

A deputation from the committee of the Auckland Flour and Bread Trade Aesocialion waited on us this morning, in referonce co tho letter publishod in our last evening's issue from MrF. Wilckens. dealing withthoAucklandbakers. Mr Wilckens, in the letter statos, "thab tho master bakers of Auckland have formed thomaolvos into a ' ring' and made a fast and distinct rule nob to soil bread under 6d per 41b loaf, no matter how low tho price of flour is." This 1 was emphatically denied by the deputation, who informed uo that tho price of bread will bo regulated by ' the cost of tho material used, and, furthermore, thab it is nob left to tho fancy of any baker or set of bakers as to what tho price of bread shall be. Mr Wilckens also says that a sack of good flour yields 76 41b loaves, which is equal to 152 21b loaves. This is also declared to be totally inaccurate, ac a tack of flour only gives 130 41b loaves, or 22 under his calculations. The profit which he sliovvr of £19 per ton (it was alleged by the deputation) is thus made up from miscalculations. The number of bakers who use 3 tons of flour per weok is also very small, not more than six getting through thab amount, the averago quantity consumed by bakers being Ito 1£ tons. The doputation therefore say that as tho amounts and figures given aro based on assertions which are absolutely incorrect, the whole of his calculations ara quite wrong and are calculated to mislead the public. They assert emphatically that 3d per 21b loaf is the very lowest figure at which bread can bo Fold with flour at its' present price if the baker is to pay his! way. i
