THE NORTH SHORE TRIANGLE.
CONTROL OF THE RESERVE,
Last cvoning a discussion of an important nature aroso at tho mooting of the Dovonporb Borough Council in connection with tho trianglo roaervo at tho North Shoro, which lho Imperial naval aubhorifcio3 aro exchanging with tho Auckland Harbour Board for a site at the Calliopo Dock.
With reference to tho Harbour Board Empowering Bill now boforo the Houso of Parliament, Mr O. Mays said ho thoughb thab bhe Council should nob allow bho occasion to pass without an effort being mado bo secure moro favourable terms for tho Council in this connection. Ho thought that now the naval authorities, who had previously he'd tho site and had now virtually codod ib to tho Auckland Harbour Board in exchango for a reclaimed site near bho dock, bho Council should endeavour to got a clause inserted in tho Bill to authorise tho transfer of lho roservo from tho Harbour Board bo tho Council, oven if tho Borough had to pay for ib. Ho was quite suro that tho residents of Dovonporb would willingly submit bo an oxbra rato for tho purposo of obtaining tho reserve, which was a vory valuablo picco of land. Ho moved that a deputation from tho Council wait upon tho Harbour Board on tho following day and ask tho consent of tho Board to tho insortion of a clause in tho Auckland Harbour Board Empowering Bill, enabling tho Board to transfer to the Council tho area of land (la 12p) known as tho Trianglo, for public works only, terms to be agrood upon.
Mr Malcolm Niccol said thero could be no objection to asking tho Harbour Board in this connection, bub ho did nob think bhab tho Legislature would allow bho Harbour Board to sell bho reserve in such a manner. Ho desired to assure tho Council that fcho North Shoro members of the Harbour Board had done tho besb bhey possibly could for bhe residents of Devonport. The Mayor (Mr Alison) said that ho and Mr Niccol had used bheir bost oxerbions on b.half of tho residents of North Shoro, and no ono could havo done more. It was beyond dispubo bhab bho rosorvo in question should bo acquired for tho people of Devonport for public purposes. If tho land could be acquired for a reasonable sum, say £500, it would bo. dosirablo and expedient bo sbrike a spocial rate to purchase ifc. Mr Niccol suggested tho advisabiliby of leasing tho land from tho Board aba nominal rent, aba term of say 50 years, and the Mayor supported this as an alternative course.
The motion was agreed to. Messrs 0. Mays, VV. It. Duder, and Macky were requested to form tho deputation to the Board.
