SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS.
POLICE RAID AT CHRISTCHURCH.

Chbistohuboh, this day. The police made a raid on a band of sus. picious characters, and at the R.M. Court yesterday sixteen wero. charged with having nc lawful visible means of support. Seven did not appear and the cases were adjourned. One person was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. Randal, keeper of a billiard room, was charged with keeping a house of resort for reputed thieves. The defendant was willing to purge tho house of all bad characters, or even close ib. The R.M. said, if convicted, he should imprison the defendant, but considering the reported improvement in hia conduct he dismissed tho case, as tho man's position seemed forced upon him. A number of suspicious characters have arrived here of late, and it is hoped to day's prosecution will rid the ciby of them
