CRUSHING DEFEAT OF THE LOCAL
TEAM,
Fully 6,000 spectators were present ab Epsom yesterday afternoon to witness the eixth interprovincial football contest between Canterbury and Auckland, The weather was almost perfect forfootball. The play of the visitors was a revelation to Auckland,, their fast and quick passing being the cleverest ever seen in Auckland. Tho Canterbury beam made the play open and fast, and completely over-matched the local team in almost evory dopartmonb of tho game. In the first spell Canterbury scored 7 points, and in the second half of tho game added another 17 points to their total, and when timo was called had won by 24 points to nil. Auckland won tho toss and took advantage of tha slight wind blowing. Evans kicked oil for Canterbury, tho ball going out just past bho centre. From tho throw-in, the Canterbury forwards by a looso dribble workod tho play into Auckland's 25, whero Stoko held tho ball, and Auckland were awardod a freo kick.- Price marked the kick and Garrard essayed a goal, but was unsuccessful, and Masofieldreturned to near the contro. A scrum onsuod, which Auckland carried, and tho local forwards dribblod back to Mendelson, bub the Canterbury man cloverly stopped, and Balch kicked to Kissling, who Bonb tbo ball oub near Canterbury's 25. From a kick by Masofield, Mendelson sentiho bull oub by tho 50 Hag. From v scrum somo grand passing was dono by Cantabs. Price secured tho ball, and passed to A. Hobbs, who transferred to Leo, and the lattor scored

Jorvis kicked out, Hobbs "returning to centre. Lee and Elliott wero both conspicuous in tho following play. From tho following scrum Riley got away, and passed to Jervis, who gob to Cantabs' 25 before he was downed. Balch, by a high kick, rcliovod his line, ond Humphreys made his way to the centre, bub held tho "ball, and Auckland wore awarded a free kick, from which they compelled Canterbury to forco, Garrard kicked out, and Kisaling returned tho ball to.centre. By good passing, Canterbury worked the-ball to Auckland's 25. From a loosoacrum, Masohold fumbled a pass, and Canterbury forwards dribbling the ball across, Auckland woro forced. Jervis kicked oub, and Hobbs reburned inbo cenbre, whero Canberbury forwards rushed tho ball insido Auckland's 25. Hobbs gob well away, bub Riley collared him and got away from tho next pass, and after making a grand run ho passed to Masefield. Tho latter was overhauled by Hobbs when a score looked imminent, and soveral scrums followed near tho visitor.V line. The latter ro- ! moved tho dagger, bub Rhodes \ made a strong run to Canterbury'^ 25, and Elliott passed to Masefield, who was collared within a few yards of the line. From a scrum Masefield secured a mark which resulted •in Canterbury being forced. The ball w/as ordered back from tho kick-out aud- a scrum followed. Canterbury then started a fast rush, and Masefield replied with a strong, fine run, knocking oyer three oi his opponents. Canterbury forwards again worked tne ball, back to centre, Rhodes gob away from a scrum, and by a fast dribble was instrumental in sending the ball pasb centro. From the scrum Canterbury got tbe .'ball, and after somo of the best passing yet Been hore, the ball guiim through ab least nine hands, Johnstono scored at Dry, and Hobbs added tho major points. After tho usuallntcrval, Stewart kicked off for Auckland, Hobbs returning into touch in his own territory. A few scrums ensued, and Elliott failed to take the ball from Braund's pass. Johnstono secured it, and after some smart paesing, Balche ventually got ovor and scored. - He took the kick himself, but did nob succeed, bhe ball hitting she post. Jervis tried ab goal, bub failed. Garrard kicked oub and Jervis reburned to Canterbury's 25. From the line out Speighb passed to Elliobb, but bho labter made a bad pass to Riley, and Leo intercepted. The relief was only temporary, and Elliobb rebrioved himseif and made a dash bo near hia opponents' litle. A fine kick by Hobbs inbo touch, however, placed Canberbury oub of serious difficulties, At Canterbury's 25 Garrard played offside, and Auckland was given another free kick, bub Jervis' attempt at goal was again a failure, Some fast play followed, Auckland gradually edging down to their opponents' line, when thoy made frantic efforts to score. Canberbury by good combined play again relieved, and a flnoforward rush carried play pasbbhe centre. Speight book the ball from the line oub and led a fasb rush to bho visibors' '25. Mendolaou stopped ib, and returned to centre. Canterbury now penned Auckland up in their . ground, aod near bho cenbro bhe former were awarded a free kick. Garrard made a shob ab goal, bub did nob succeed. Jervis kicked oub and play centred. Prico easily stopped an Auckland rush, bub Speight, Stewarb and McMillan again dribbled to inside Canterbury's 25. Mendelson stopped and kickedtonear centre. The labber senb ib to Hobbs, who ran to the 25, where ho was tackled by Kissliug. He passed to Garrard, who in turn passed to Evans, and the latter scored. Balch kicked a goal. Canterbury 14 points Auckland nil From the kick off, Canterbury returned to the attack, and Hobbs potted, the ball falling uuder the bar. Kissling saved, but a scrum followed near the line. The Auckland forwards removed the danger. Canterbury were given a free kick, and Garrard made a fine kick from near tho centre, and senb the ball bebween the posts.
Canterbury 17 Auckland nil From the kick-off, play centred, and then Jervis and Braund made frantic efforts to scote. From the throw in, Price secured the ball, and passed to Garrard. Garrard trans? ferred to Evans, and the Canterbury captain secured an easy try. Balch tried at goal but failed. Canterbury 19 points Auckland nil From the kick-out the Canterbury forwards made a sweeping charge, which the local forwards returned and dribbled to past the 50 flag, bub Prince stopped their progress, and eluding the blue and white forwards the Canterbury team simply demoralised Auckland by their wonderful play. Stewart kicked out and the Canterbury forwards carried tho play to Auckland's 25, where Canterbury were awarded a free kick. Balch kicked a goal. Canterbury 24 Auckland nil Auckland forwards made a grand rush and Elliott dribbled the ball across the line, but no score resulted, and the game ended in a win for Canterbury by 24 pointß to nil. Mr J. Arneil gave every satisfaction as refereo.
