QUARTERLY LICENSING MEETING.

Thb quarterly meeting of the Aucklond Licensing Committee was held in tho Court buildings thia morning. There were present : Messrs J. J. Holland, C. Bailey, A. Porter, T. T. Masefield and J. Winks. The Chairman, Mr Holland, said that the police reporta in reference to the conduct of the various hotela.were very satisfactory, except in one instance in City North, and arrangements had boen made to have tho license transferred in that case.

City North.—An application for a transfer of the license of the Governor Browne Hotel from Mary Coyle to Thomas Kieloy was granted. Another application in the case of the Oriental Hotel to have the license transferred from John Barrett to Michael Gallagher was also granted. City South.—The license of the Rising Sun Hotel was transferred from Alfred Robertson to Eleanor Eliza Barrett.

City East.— Mr Baume appeared on bohalf of Mr S. C. Caulton, of tho Central Hotel, ' asking the Committee that his client might h>ive permission granted to enlarge his premises, which at present were insufficient for hia business.—Mr Caulton wished to have some thirty-five more bedrooms so as to give increased sleeping accommodation for boardors and visitors. Ho proposed to keep Ohe old portion of the building for tho use of permanent boarders, and his family, and to fit up the new addition with a restaurant, bar, ej;c.—Mr Cotter said he would like to know under what section of the Act Mr Baume made the application. — Mr Baumo explained his position, but Mr Cotter, who appeared for J. Gallagher, of the British Hotol, to oppose the application,* said that the matter must be brought up at the annual, not the quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee.— After considering the matter, the Committee decided that the application for another bar could not be granted.—Mr Baume pointed out that the application was only for an enlargement of the presont premises, not for a new hotol, but the Committee kept to their decision, and gtwft their opinion that the matter should havo been loft tii! the annual meeting.--Mr Baurao said thab liis clionb would certainly make tlit* nppiicatiou on that nccasioo.
