BAND OF HOPE UNION.

Tun City Hall presentod a very picturesque and animated scene yesterday evening, when about 220 children from tho various Bands of Hope forming the Auckland Union gave an entortainmont in aid of tho prize fund for the annual competition. The Rev. Canon Mac Murray occupied the chair. The following programme was gone through :—Opening chorus, " Hail, Smiling Morn," choir; chorup, " Laugh and Grow Fat," choir; action song, "The Excursion Train," choir; recitation, "A Sermon," Mies Jennie Pollock ; chorus, " Fearless and Free," choir; swinging song, " Oh, tho Sports." choir; recitation, "One Niche Higher," Master S. Marson ; action eong, "Stitch, Stitch, Stitch," choir; round, " Drink, Strong Drink," choir; action song, " Row, Row, Row," choir; recitation, " Doath Struggles," MiftH Grindrod ; chorus, " Biuiish tho Demon Drink," choir ; action song, " Tho Fire Brigade," choir ; " National Anthem."

Thechoir was conducted very successfully by MrS. Frith, while Mr Carlovr manipulated t,he harmonium and Mr Edmonds the "ioloncollo. Tho entertainmont was a very pretty one. Tho (chairman, in hia opening addross, which was delivered after the opening chorus, impressed on the parents present tho paramount importance of moral education. Reading and writing were not tho only loskop.s which a child must learn if ho is to become a successful man in tho true and highest sense of tho term. Thero were certain'dangors which were cortain to beset tho path of every young man in tho worlds as gambling, impurity and intemperance, and it-was tho bounden duty of parents to see that tho moral sense was so doveloped and strengthened in their children bb to enable them to resist temptation whon it assailod thorn.

Mr W. J. Macdermott explained lator on in the evening that the entertainment) had been given for the purpose of raising something towards the prize fund. With regard to tho competitive temperance examination he stated the following would bo thoorrangomontof the elapses :—Class A, under 10 years, first 56 questions in Dr. Ridgo's Band of Hope Catechism ; Class B, over 10 and under 13 yeare, Jasbso questions in Dr. Ridge's Catechism ; Class C, over 13 and undor 16 years, "First Sbepa to Tomperanco ;" Class D, over 16 yeur3, Dr. Richardson's "Temperance Lesson Book." Full particulars of tho examination can bo obtained from Messrs Hill and Co., Victoriaptroeb, Mr R. French, Karangahapo Pioad, or the Secretaries of tho different societies.
