GRATTAN RIGGS COMPANY.
•' FAMINE."
Last evening, the Grattan Riggs Dramatic Company produced Hubert O'Grady's Irish drama, '"Famine," in Abbott's Opera House, before a fairly large audience. The drama itself is by no means a bright one* and the dialogue and construction are mediocre, but although handicapped in such a manner, the clever Company did remarkably well. The play comprises a number of startling situations, and these the Company made the most of. The principal character, as far as the "fab" of the piece went, was thab of the agent Sadler, who was exceedingly well portrayed by Mr Grattau "ftiggs. He acted his homogeneous Hibernian part) with perfect naturalness and a humour that was never overdrawn. Miss Maud Appleton deserves very high praise for hex admirable representation of the role of Nellie. O'Connor, the wronged heroine. Her enunciation was excellent; and her; acting was at no time strained, though the part ia a very trying one. Mr R. E. "jfnman, aa O'Connor, had little to do, but did ib well. Miss Violet Andrew made a pre fcty and lovable Lady Alice. Amongst th c other charactors, Lumley Sackville (Mr Scott Inglis) and Sir Richard Raymond ("Mr J. P. West) deserve favourable mention.,
This evening "Famino" will be repeated, and the Canterbury football team, now in Auckland, will br> present by invitation. The next production of the Grattan Riggs Company will brj "The Irißh Detective."
