Tho work of purging tho Auckland electoral rolls is busily proceeding. This morning the first sitting for electors to prove their right .to have their names retained op tho Eden, VVaitomata, Newton, and Purnoll electoral rolls took place, Dr. Giles sitting on the Bench. It waa stated by several electors that they had waited on Mr Collins and Mr Seaman after receiving summonses objecting to their names remaining on tho, roll, an.d had been told that they must pay a fine of ss, or, in default, that they would bo fined 10s if the case went to the Court. In two instances, tho fee demanded had been paid. Dr. Giles said that tho charire was illoyal and an abuse on tho process of the Court. Mr W, S. Collins (who appeared on behalf of the Registration Officer) said that he waa instructed to apply for costs on tho grouud of the cost, trouble, and expense the Government were pub to in rectifying the roll from persons who did not appear. Dr. Giles said that the Legislature never meant that the franchise should be a nuisance to the public, ruling that the Registration Officer had no right to charge electors a fee. Mr Collins eaid that he would return any monoy received. In severnl cases costs were granted against the R >gistration Officer. Another sitting of tho Court takes place on the 26th September. Over 100 summonses have been issued at tho instance of Mr Haultain, Registrar for City of Auckland, to persons whose freehold qualifications are insufficiently described.

A man 'named ft. Featherston died suddenly at Waiwera yesterday. Under the circumstances it was decided to hold an inquest to-day. Mr Angrovo officiated as coronor. It is not known whether deceased had received medical attendance.

A meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association is to be held this evening at 8 o'clock in the Drill-shea, to consider the practicability of sending representatives to New South Wales.
