ARRIVAL OF THE CANTERBURY TEAM.
The members of tha Canterbury Representative Football Team arrived from Napier about nine o'clock this morning by the steamer Tarawera. They had a yood passage up the coast, and are all in splendid trim for the intorprovincial match on Wednesday next. Owing to tho steamer getting in much earlier than was expected, the Rugby Union were rather taken by surprise, only ono member of the committee, Mr T. Henderson, chairman, being present to welcome the visitors. However, a brake for their conveyance was in attendance, and tho team were driven to the Royal Mail Hotel, where they will remain during their stay here. The local Rugby Union are leaving nothing undone that will help to make the visit enjoyable and pleasant, and with tho lovely weather that is prevailing their oliorts ought to be successful, and the visitors should certainly tako away a favourable impression of this northern portion of the colony. Tho following nro the names of those who arrived this morning :— Messrs F. Evans.(captain), W. Mendelaon, W, Lang, F. Hobb?, W. Balch, G. W. Forbes, W. Price, L. Ebort, Stokea, J. Childs, A. Ebert, \V. Humphreys, VV. Samuels, J. McKendry, A. Johnstone, A. Hobbs, A. E. White, G. Lee, F. Haskins, G. Forrest and C. Garrard. This afternoon they proceeded out to Potter's Paddock in brakes, accompanied by several of the local players, to indulge in a practice match. They are to visit tho City Hall and witness the performance of the Italian Opera Company this evening, another practice game will be held to-morrow morning, and in the afternoon the team is to go for a fishing excursion down the harbour. Tho Irish drama •'Famine" which is now being staged byGrabtan Riggs Company at tho Opera House will bo visited in the evening. The footballers go out for a drive on Wednesday morning prior to the match, and v.ill probably visit Mr T. Morrin's stud at Mount Wellington. In the afternoon they will be fully engaged in upholding their reputation as footballers at Epsom ; and their last evening here will be spent at Herr Tutschka's concert at the City Hall. On Thursday the team proceed to their Southern homes. It may be mentioned that none of tho members of tho Canterbury team which visited Auckland in 1887 ai:e included in the prosont team.
