COLOURED LABOUR.
Sydney, July 1,
The Presbyterian Hebridean Mission Synod, consisting of seventeen European missionaries, has met and decided to forward a protest to Lord Knutsford against the resumption of the Kanaka labour traffic, on the ground that while not disputing the contention of' cheap labour as a necessity for the sugar industry of Queensland, the knowledge within the possession of the Synod leads it to affirm that the traffic cannot be carried on with jußtice •to the natives, or honour to the British nation, despite the pledges as to regulations, etc., given by Queensland. , The absence of civilised Government to protect the interest of natives makes recruiting, without abuse, an impossibility. The deportation of the young able-bodied natives prevents the development of industry, hinders the .advancement of civilisation and Christianity, and is a powerful factor in the depopulation ot the islands. The practice of making large presents to the natives recruited, is universally regarded by them aa purchase money, and the traffic in human beings is having a demoralising effect..
