WAIKATO NOTES.

(BY .Kr.EORAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT. )

Hamilton, this day

The Hon. Mr Seddon and party passed through Hamilton at 8 o'clock yesterday morning by special train, en route to Te Kuiti and Mokau, to inspect the railway works, etc. The party returned to Hamilton ab 5 o'clock, and pub up ab Bright's Commercial Hotel for tho night. The?party consists of Col. Eraser, M.H.R.; Mr Hales, Chief Engineer; Mr Mueller, Chief Surveyor; Mr, Vickerman, District Surveyor; Mr Hanmer, Secretary; and Inspector Emerson. Mr Seddon told me he was well pleased with his visit throughout, finding everything working satisfactorily. The men on the Mokau line, though working in very hard country, consisting-' ot volcanic rock intermingled with riolTte boulders and very hard, also papa rock of the hardest kind, are making on an average 7s 7d per diem, and provisions are cheap, so that they are doing well, Mr Seddon was surprised to find some women and children in such an oub -of - tho - way place, bub all seemed content. Tho roads are very bad, and much astonishment was expressed at bhe vvay things are gob up to such out-of-che way places. A deviation is being surveyed further along tho line, to try and avoid some deep cutting, and also a small tunnel which was laid out. The present section of the line is costing some £10,000 per milo, being the mosb expensive portion yet tackled. The party return to Auckland to-day. Mr Seddon is going bo Wellington by Friday evening's steamer, after a forfcnifht's absence, having left there last Friday week. Colonel Fraser eoes to the Thames to-nigh!.
