TIONERY.

Among our most flourishing local industries is the confectionery business carried on by Mr C. G. Laurie, ab Newmarkeb, Auckland. He started business in a small way in 1883, employing two hands, and has now so extended his trade as to employ 17 hands. He has also built a commodious factory at Newmarket, with all bhe latesb improved machinery, which is driven by sbeam power.. The lower storey of the factory is conveniently laid oub with engine, boiler, two revolving pans, 5 furnaces, sugar mill, and three pairs of brass rollers of all designs for turning out various kinds ot lollies; also a drying room, which is heated by steam pipes, and constantly kepb up to 110 degrees of heab for drying the lozenges, poel, etc. Further on we come to the appliances for preserving and candying the lemon, orange, and citron peel, which looks very nice. This is a specialty with the firm, which is turning oub a considerable quantity yearly, and aa bhe Auckland climate is well adapted, for the growth of lemdns, bhis should beqpme a very important indusbry. Then we come to the lozenge department, where lozenges such as conversations, musk rose, cough, etc., ebc, are cub out wibh greab rapidity. Upstairs girls are busily engaged packing, wrapping, etc. There is also a furnace and sbeam melting pan for making fancy confectiouory, such as jujube., London mixtures, chocolate creams, etc.

In the manufacturing of bhe confectionery nobbing bub bhe purest sugars and vegetable colours are used. A great specialty of boiled goods is the eucalyptic drops, which are pub up in Jib bottles sold by all chemists and storekeepers. The dry goods are nob to be surpassed for quality in New Zealand and are equal to any English goods. Mr Laurie is turning out (on an average) over one thousand 141b tins of confectionery per month, which is equal to about 62 ton weight. The cordials, vinegar, chewing gum, and numerous other articles are all of the best quality, each department being in the hands of a competent man. Besides the factory, Mr Laurie has two shops in Queen-sbreeb, where can be seen a variety of goods manufactured ab the works, typon sending for a price list the trade will find that they can obtain a superior/article- aba fair price. .The goods are also delivered by the maker's own carts in tho town wid suburbs daily,
