STATISTICS AND RETURNS
The returns of gold exported from lSew Zealand during tho last quarter show an increase of 24,5390/., value £146,-385, over [he returns for the first quarter of lbOl. The amount of Customs revenue collected ab tho several ports during the financial year ended 31st March last shows that Auckland contributed £360,900 Wellington ±-328,733, Lyttelton £2G2,060, and Dunedin £382,105. Tho voarly collection of tho agricultural statistics for tho counties of Eden, Manukau,. Waitemata and .Rodney aro now comnleta An increase in the number ot holdings and tho arw under crop is shown in the returns, and the crops of w.beab and oats have been bettor than in the previous year, lhere is an increase of 709 holdings in the four counties compared with 1891, and the toital number of acres undei crop is 13,454 more than in IMK, which mueb bo conßidorod satisfactory. Tho average of the wheat crop m the four countioa this season is as follows :— Waitcmata County, 2557 bushels per aero; Rodney, 27-03 bushels per acre ; Fden 27"18 buehela per aero; and Manukau 27-32 bushels per acre. In the matter of notatoen, the average for Waiteinaca v 4-16 tons per aero ; Manukau, 4-21 tons ncr aero; jGden, 4-61 tons per aero; and Rodney, 4-74 tons per acre. The average of the tt'oitemata County both in wheat and potatoes is thus lower than the other three, which is only to be expected when, the interior quality of tho land _is considered Manukau shows a good increase in the rotarn of barley. The table appended below will show this year a retain* in tho four counties compared witu the two previous* years :— .
The returns also show that there has been a great incroase in the number of horned cattle. The following table gives the number of horned cattle compared with breeding cows in tho four counties : —
The meteorological returns f or April show 2-02 inches of rain in Auckland, 572 in Wellington, I*B3 at Liner ji n> Christchurcb, and 3'Bl at Dunedin.
According to a Gazette published on May 13 the estimated population of tho colony on the 31st March last was 679,431, being 360.558 roal'js and 318,573 females.
The Thames 'Board of Reviewers have made £10.000 reductions on tho unimproved valuo of the R.auri Timber Company's properties, and £14,000 reductions on the total assessment.
The Cuistotnfi revenue collected in the colony during J.asb month totalled £130,452 14a 6d, asaea'insb £132,536 6s lOd for tha correspondihg' ■ month lnsb year. Aucklaud's contribution ' was £31 3 867 8s 6d.
The total value of the imports into the colony las'j .quarter was £1,939,476, a3 compared with £1,737,480 for the corresponding r jerlod of last year. Tho value of tho expo r'ts lant quarter was £3,955,293, as against £3,778,275 for the corresponding quarto1 sof 1891. Of the imports Auckland contributed £465,219 ; Wellington, £408,497; Chrietchurch, £312,813; Dunodin, £A98,73Fi. Of exports Auckland contributed £?,94,074 ; Wellington, £G56,955 ; Napier, £603,P/J2 ; Ohristchurch. £633,163 ; Duneciin, /i 411,29«.
Th.c agricultural statistics juefc completed for tho four counties in the neighbourhood of Auckland—Eden, Manukau, Waitemata and Rodney—show tho total areas of orchards an*s plantations of fruit trees. In tha county of. Eden thore are 620 acres io orchard,, including- all areas ot nob lens than v quarter of an acre in extent, in which fruit trees form tho chief object of cultivation. In garden there are 47G acres in thiscounity. In the county of Manukau there j are 1,607 acres laid down in orchard, and 276 in pardon. In the county of Waitemata thero are 1,396 acres of orchard, and 240 acres of garden, and in Rodnoy county them are 912 acres in orchard and 168 in garc) r ja .
In certain statistics concerninj? the Tonea Group compiled by tho Collector c\if Customs afc Nukualofa, the population of the Friendly Islands is stated to be 19,639, of which 353 are foreigners. Tho native population ia distributed through the various islands as follows :—• Tongatabu, 6,675; Eva, 353; Otu. Haabai, 5,114 ; Otu Vavau, 5,084 ; Niuafoou, 993; Niuatobutabu, 665; total, 19,186. The foreigners are classed as:— ~j Americans, 25 ; British, 206 ; French, 14,; Germans, 90; other nationalities,' ]'£; total, 353. Thore ai.-e but three reside from tho Celestial Empire in Tonga.
