Last Monday evening, the usual meeting of St. John's Mutual Improvement Association took place in the schoolroom. The subject for discussion was "Thackeray." It was opened by an able and interesting essay on the life and works of Thackeray, by Mr Patterson, B.A. The following members contributed readings frcm the author's works :—Mrs Patterson, Messrs Bartley, Tichbon, and Watkina, the readers coming in for a fair share of criticism by the mermberß. During the evening, the following musical items were rendered: — Pianoforte solo, Mrs Angus ; song. Miss ForsaUh; sohg, Mies Gordon. The pleasunt evening was brought to a close by tha Benediction being pronounced,
