OUR DEFENCES.

Tho Royal Irish Rifle Volunteer Company, which was formed in Auckland about two years ago, has had a briof and uneventful existence, being now about to break up. Tho Company is now in process of disbandmont, and tho members aro returning thoir arms and accoutrements into tho hands of tho dofenco authorities. Tho membership of the Company had been steadily falling off for some timo past, and recently tho corps becamo so weak, financially and othorwiso, that ib was felt advisablo to disband. Captain T'obiu was tho .llieer in command. At Mount Eden range, on April 9th, tho annual firing for tliu Government district modal took place, under the able managej niont of Major Morrow, assisted by Staff Sergeant-Major Scully. Tho ranges were 200, 300, and 500 yards, ten shots at each, class firing targets and conditions, no sighting shots allowed. Gunner Percy Browno, of tho "A" Battory, won tho medal, i with tho good score of eighty-oight, j Private Osborne (winner in 1890) being j second, and Gunner McCallum (winner liv 1891) third. Only those Volunteers who capitated last year and qualified as marksmen were allowed to compete, and this fact accounts for the absence of a number of well-known shots, as they were not eligible. At tho Drill-shed on April sth the annual presentation of prizes to tho Victoria Rifle, was mado by Lieut. Somers. The j Company, divided into four squads of one sergeant and ten men oach, had competed for prizes offered for the best record of attendances at drill, and tho result had proved eminently satisfactory. Tho first prize of _10 was awarded to tho squad under Colour-Sergeant Skinner, and the second prizo of £5 to tho squad under Sergeant Kearney. Colour-Sergoant Skinner's squad also carried oil a prizo of i! 4 for tho moat efficient squad at volleyfiring. For tho ensuing year tho Company will be dividod into livo snuads to competo for prizes ranging from £10 to £2. Tho Newton Rifles hold their annual competition for the Company's belt and prizes on Saturday afternoon, tho 16th inst., tho belt being won by Sergeant Rose, who also wins a medal and 10s for best shot, with a scoro of 109. The Company was divided into three classes, and the prizc3 wore won • as under -.—First Class (200, 300, 400 and 500yds).—Vol. Cox, 2nd, £1, 88; Vol. Pureed, 3rd, 15s, 79 ; Vol. Good, 4th, lOe, 06; Vol. J. The Engineer Company of Volunteers met at the Mount Edon Range, under Lieut. Palmer, on Saturday afternoon, April lote, and fired for their championship bole, and for a medal presented by Harrison and Co. of England. Tho firing was at 200, 30(\ 400, and 500 yds. Sapper Allen carried off tho belt for tho fifth timo, with the fine score of 81, and Sapper Waite won the modal with tho next highest scoro of 75. The scores made were as follows :—Sapper Allen, 81 ; Sapper Waite, 75 ; Sapper Beddeley, 72 ; Sapper Webb, 71 ; Sapper Pulman, 69 : Sapper Bowman, 62 ; Sapper ScutTert, 02 ; Sapper Patterson, 50; Sapper O'Connell, 52; Sapper , Barry, 47 ; Sergeant Harley, 47 ; Sapoer Rutherford, 46; Sapper Ludlow, 40; . Sapper Waddingham, 39. At tho conclusion of the firing cheers were given for the winners. There was a good attendance of volunteers at. tho infantry inspection parade at tho Di ill-shed on April 12. Colonel ' Goring then presented Colour-Sergeant Skinner of tho Victoria Rifles with the district belt, won by him at tho recent competition at tho Mount Edon Range, and also presented Volunteer Beamish with tho medal which belongs to him as tho holder of the Victoria Company's belt. . The medal presented by Surgeon Dawson for the best attendance on' parade was equally the property of Sergeant-Major Kearney and Corporal \ Kearney, father and son having an equally ■ good record. The father generously con--ceded his claim to tho medal, and it was presented to Corporal Kearney amidst loud applause. The Garrison Band, which was present, contributed a number of popular selections. The rifle competition for Captain Clark's , Champion _e.lt took placo on Saturday, March 26th at the Mount Eden Range, when some fifty competitors wore present. Although th - weather was fine, a variable, wind prevailed from south-east to south- . west, which caused some rather erratic i shooting on the part of even some ot the ~ well-known crack shots. The firing was' : under the general superintendence of Cantain Robertson, Newton Company, who wasp ably assisted by Lieutenant Montgomery; 11 of the City Guards. Subjoined are the], scores :— } i
