PROPOSAL TO EXTEND THE TIME

Reeftok, this day. A DEPUTATION of influential citizens headed by Mr Irving, County Chairman, waited on Mr R. Reeves, M.H.R., with reference to an application by the Midland Railway Company for an cxtonsion of time to complete their contract. Tho deputation askod Mr Reoves to uso his best intluence to get tho Company's request granted, subject to tho condition thab the land bo thrown open for settlement, as widespread dissatisfaction at present exists, owing to the inability of intending Rettlers to acquire land. Also, that the work of making the railway be vigorously prosecuted.

Mr Reeves, in reply, stated that he looked upon tho railway as a groat national undertaking, and would endeavour to treat the Company in tho most considerate manner posaiblo without infringing tho public interest. Ho hoped that full facilities would bo given ab an early date for the settlement promised. He would also do his best to urge the necessity for completing the lino in the earliest possible time. Personally he knew a hundred instances whore people who applied for land had been unable to obtain a title owing to tho unsatisfactory rolations existing between the Government and tho Company, and ho would do his best to remove these disabilities.
