HARBOUR BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Harbour Board was held this afternoon, when there were present: Messrs C. C. McMillan (chairman), M. Niccol, J. Trenwith, P. Dignan, C. Wright, S, T. George, E. XV. Alison, XV. Crowther, T. Henderson, A. E. Devore, J. H. Witheford.

New Member.— Mr S. T. George, elected to represent the Parnell Borough, was welcomed as a member of tho Board and took the seat previously occupied by Mr Jno. Savage.

Railway Wharf.— The Foreman of Works recommended that the wholo of the Railway Wharf be redecked, at a cost of £'2,400. —The Railway Commissioner de] clined to contribute towards the cost of repairs.

Wharf Charges.—A joint letter from Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co., Cruickshank and Co., New Zealand Shipping Company, A. Heather, and Stono Bros, (for Tyser Company), asked consideration of the charges for berthing and removal from wharf of all vessels exceeding 120 tons register. It was pointed out that a steamer of 4,000 tons enters and leaves the port in charge of a pilot, for whoso services twopence per ton oacli way is levied, amounting to £66 13s 4d. The Harbour-master relievos tho pilot when the ship is within _00 yards of tho wharf to berth her, and, when leaving, removes her the same distance from tho berth into the stream, for which short service the Board's by - laws provide an extra feo of one penny per ton each way, amounting, with pilotage, to tho sum of £100, added to which fcho harbour dues and wharfage constitute a sufficiently heavy impost to make owners hesitate in sending vessels to this port.—Referred to the Works and Tariff Committee.

Swimming Spouts.—Tho use of tho Auckland Dock was granted to Mr J. F. Pannell on March 17th for swimming sports, at a charge of i' 4, and to Mr C. F. Bourne, on behalf of the Grammar School, for sports on March 4th, fr6o of charge, provided no charge is made for admission.
