NOTES FROM SYDNEY.

A racing friend of mine in Sydney, who knows what he is writing about", sends me the following interesting notes : The Auckland-owned Satyr has proved himself a good horse. He won his recent races at Randwick like lv tradesman. It was the greatest pity in the world thab Satyr was not kept for the V.R.C. Grand National. With about 9st 71b it would have been a moral, and that is the only jumping event you can win money over," besides being a good stake. I have always advocated New Zealand horses being in Australia for at least seven or eight months to bo able to prove their best form. Of course, j-ou see exceptions, but my opinion is that the New Zealand horse improves a stone or more after he has been here some months. 1 will not cast any reflections on your trainers, for 1 am quite satisfied they don't get a fair chance. They come over here and stay a few months, and their horses look well enough to the eye, but there is something wrong somewhero, and they can't find out the real cause. Want of time is tho matter. Now, for instance, there is Roprisal. He will be hero aboub a month by the time ho has to face the Newmarket Handicap field, and will have to be a daisy to win. Reprisal may run ono good race, like, for instanoo, Mitrailleuse when she won tho Bourke Handicap ; but after one or two races they invariably go to pieces. Miss Letty is a boautiful filly. You hear talk aboub there boing no money in New Zealand, but I always notice if there is a decent horse owned in Maoriland what a lot of money they send over. I think it's all " kid " about money being tight. Turfites seem to have a plant somewhere, perhaps out in tho backyard. My own fancy at present for the Newmarket Handicap is Paris. The little fellow has got his share of weight, but I have an idea that sprinting is his game. He ought to have won tho Anniversary Handicap. With Wally Clifford on his back it would have been 100 to 1 on him. For the Australian Cup Oxide, another little follow, is my fancy. Ho has always run well, and I fancy, if at his best on the day, will take a lot of beating. Bungebah is favourite for tho short race, at 100 to 13. He is a wonderful galloper, but 10st 41b i 9 a great weight, and when he has to meob fast horses like Paris it won't improve matters. Still, he must be dangerous.
