Toole and the Scene-Shifter.
Mr J. L. Toole and the company of players who are associated with him concluded their visit to Liverpool recently. Mr Toole appeared before the curtain, and in the course of his remarks »aid :—I am tonight reminded of an incident which occurred here bwenty-two or twenty-throe years ago, when I wis a child in arms. (Laughter.) I had been playing at tho Prince of Wales Theatre, Clayton Square and it was my last night. A very good fellow, the local dresser, who varied that occupabion by scene-shifting— (laugbtor)~ sald to me, 'Mr Toole, you ought nob to lease Liverpool. Why not settle down here ?' Well,. 1 told him I had to go to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, and other places, which helookedupon as foreign cities. (Laughter.) I therefore could not take up my residence here. He then said, ' You should leave off noting and take a public-house.' (Loud laughter.)
