GREAT DAMAGE REPORTED.
SETTLERS RESCUED BY ROPES,

Oamartj, thie day. The details of the damages caused by the foods are coming to hand.
The first man through from Kurow reports terrible ravages in that district. Tons of grain have been destroyed. , The bridges at Wbarekare, Awaktno, Otir.to, and Otokaike are down, as well 33 those ab Kurow and Duneroon.
The railway is badly damaged in several places on the Kurow line. Many farms are submerged. The Maerewhenua River is still rising. At dark last night several settlers had narrow escapes from drowning, and were rescued from their houses by ropes. It is reported that a man is lost on the road above Jiurow. The police are inquiring. A man was reported drowned abKakanui, but he has turned ud.
The weather is now fine with a brisk breeze.
The Governor passed through at noon by a special train.
There wae absolutely no demonstration by the few people assembled on the platform.
