THE NEW GOVERNOR.

The news that the Earl of Glasgow had been appointed Governor of New Zealand> which we were able to publish as a second edition at five o'clock last night, came as a surprise to • most people, the Earl's name having never previously been mentioned among the probable appointees to the office. Very little is known of the new Governor. He was born in 1833 i and ia the eldest son of Mr Patrick Boyle, of Shewaltou, Ayrshire. His mother was a daughter of -Sir Robert t>. H. Elphinstone. He entered the Royal Navy, served in the llussian and China wars and attained the rank of captain. In 1873 he married Dorothea Thomasina, eldest daughter of Sir Edward Hunter Blair. The Earldom of Glasgow, and Viscounty of Kelburne (created in 1703), and the Barony of Boyle (dating from 1699) fell to the present Earl in April, 1890, in default of male issue to the previous Earl, who also inherited from hia father the Barony of Ross of Hawkhead, in the county of Renfrew, in the peerage of the United Kingdom (created in 1815). The latter title, however, did nob pa? 3 to the pre-

sent Earl of Glasgow, but became extinct. The new Governor therefore is not entitled to flib in the House of Lords unless as a representative peer from Scotland. He is, however very wealthy ; according to the "Financial Reform Almanac," his landed estates comprise 34,356 acres, and yield a rental of £40,276 per annum. The new Governor is a Conservative, and in the absence of any diplomatic experience, it seems probable that his career as Governor in the present; condition ot politics in New Zealaud will be beset with peculiar difficulties. Burkes "Peerage" gives the following particulara :— David Boyle, Captain K.JN. (retired). of Shewalton, near Dreghom, and D.L., born May 31st, 1833; married 23rd July, 1873, Dorothea Elizabeth Thomaeina, eldesb daughter of fair Edward Hunter Blair, Barb., and has is?ue Patrick James, born 18th June, 1874; Edward George, born 16th June, 187b ; James, born 11th March, 1880: John David, born Bth July, 1884; Augusta Helen Elizabeth, born 25th August, 1876 ; Alice Mary, born 18th December, 1877 ; Dorothy Montagu, born 14th March, 1879.
