THE BETTING MARKET.
(From the' , Melbourne Sportsman.")
This title really seems to bo a misnomer, as there is so very little betting current over coming events that it would be folly to draw out a table of quotations.
' For the Newmarket Handicap Bungebah is a strong , first favourite at 100 to 12, which price has been taken, but without causing the layers to resfrarpen their pencils" A lot of money seemed to bo in the market for Fernando, ami JOO to 5 was freely taken and wanted. The came price rules Pygmaliou and Titan, but neither one ia backed for a great amount. Shamrock and Avondale receive moderate support at 25 to 1, but no commission has appeared with regard to either. 1 Strathmore rules very firmly for the Australian Gup, and 5 to 1 ia difficult to obtain.
His stable companion, Steadfast, receives plenty of support in small sums at 100 to 8, which was wanted last evening. Malvolio and Tirailleur are nominally at 10 to 1 each, bub there is any amount of money for either at the price, and G'Naroo has been nibbled at, his price being 100 to 8.
In doubles the bookmakers will only lay 100 to 3 Bungebah and Strathmore, and outside the combination 100 to 1, starting with last year's winner of the Newmarket or finishing with the Guineas and Derby hero. About any other double 200 to 1 can be easily obtained.
Wiring last niichb, our Sydney correspondent says:—"There is no betting on coming events. Bungebah is firm at 7to 1 for the Newmarket Handicap. Bar him, 100 to 5 can be had."
